The store is backed by a production facility in The Junction (these urban entrepreneurs advertise it as a 20-minute bike ride from the store). (Any aspiring artist can have their own images put into a pillow or piece of clothing, too, thanks to Nuvango’s custom service.) “If you want an image in a particular size, we can have that made for you and brought into the store in a few days,” says Laing. Customers buy items off the rack, but it’s really a made-to-order operation. (The company also sells prints on framed canvases.) The gallery was a key component, as it let the artists working with Nuvango show off their original works.Īnd while Nuvango’s lower floor looks like a regular retail operation, stocking every image in every size is not the goal here. Since that included clothing, a retail operation was in order to complement the online business. Former high school buddies Drew Downs and Jamie Pichora loved art and art magazines, and combined their skills - commerce and engineering, respectively - to launch GelaSkins, which made iPod and laptop cases adorned with images made by artists.Ī year ago, they rebranded with a name change to Nuvango (rhymes with mango) and a plan to make original art truly accessible with a much larger product line. Artists who work with the brand have a say in how their consumer goods are put together and get a royalty for every item sold.Īrt inspired the formation of the company in 2005.

“We’re art-first,” says Dawn Laing, director of communications and marketing for the company. Customers can order these online, nab something from the shelves, or place an order at this flagship location, which opened in July. Nuvango sells cards, tech cases, pillows, t-shirts, tanks and leggings printed with images from real, original pieces of art. Yet the first-floor wares are art too, in their own way. and Bathurst St., features a retail operation downstairs, and a traditional gallery on its sunny second floor. Queen West’s newest gallery is not entirely a gallery.
